In honor of a Faith-filled Woman – Shirley Cyr

I have been very blessed in my life. I’m from a large close knit loving family and along the way have been honored to be “adopted” into many other families. None as Special to me, as the Cyr/Clark family.

35 years ago a concerned mother wanted to know who this high school senior was driving their 8th grade daughter and her friend’s home from school. I believe at the time Shirley may have used a different verb but that was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Over the past 35 years, I’ve been privileged to be part of this family, and watched my two other “little sisters” grow up into beautiful, strong independent women, just like their mom. I’ve watched in awe this wonderful, faith-filled woman being an exceptional wife and mother, working for the City of Lowell, for Gloria Brown Real Estate, Swim Team Mom, CYO Chaperon, CCD teacher, Retreat Director, Pastoral Associate in Lowell and Burlington, working tirelessly in the Prison Ministry and be a role model for grace and faith.

I’ve seen her as a proud parent watching her daughter Becky competing for the New Wave Swim Club, a tearful mom bringing Kris her oldest to Westfield State College in her freshman year. I’ve seen a beaming Mom watching Kris say I do with Bruce and Becky and Ramy exchanging vows at the Disney Chapel.

She loved the role of proud grandma! Attending as many basketball and soccer games of Kyle, Jared and Noah that she could. She loved spending days in Maryland with Zach and Jake. She loved Disney and spent countless weeks their with the grand kids including a recent Disney Cruise. She was so proud of watching her first grandson Kyle graduating College. Family vacations on the outer banks was something Shirley loved. It meant she had all the family together.

When my youngest daughter was born with some medical issues, Shirl was there to support me and my family. She and Paul agreed to be godparents, she set up the baptism and checked in on us throughout Hannah’s surgery and recovery. When my wife was diagnosed with a severe heart valve issue, Shirley who had the same procedure done a year and a half earlier, made sure we got in to see her doctor and have the same surgeon perform the heart surgery. Shirley has always been the most loving gracious lady I’ve known.

I got to spend vacations at the beach, birthdays, anniversary parties and cookouts with Shirls family. Bill & Theresa Clark her parents, sisters Judy, Donna and Cathy, brothers Bill and Richard along with their kids and Aunty Claire. Shirley and her sisters are close and so are the families and if you are part of one family your part of all.

One thing that always amazed me about Shirley was her strength in her faith. She is a living example of God’s love. No matter what she faced, sick grand kids, health concerns for parents and sisters, clergy abuse scandals, nothing shook her. She believes in the awesomeness of God’s love and always found a place and time to share that. Working at St. Michael’s and helping countless of families and children, marriage Prep, Cursillo, or the hours she spent in the Prison Ministry, She is filled with grace and is an example of God’s love for others.

A couple of years ago, after watching, praying and supporting two sisters during their fight with cancer, Shirley found out that she too had it. Yet her faith and grace never wavered. While many of us wondered why God would do this to such a faith-filled, loving person, Shirley never asked, She kept doing god’s work, caring for her family and celebrating life.

We now know her time is short and yet Kris still says Mom teaches us without even trying, saying that He (Jesus) and the angels and the saints will come for us and carry us Home.

I cannot express my love, admiration and thanks for having Shirley Cyr in my life. To often I did not take the time to tell her how wonderful she is and how much she has meant to me and my family. Her love shines through in Kris and Becky and their families. She has been Paul’s rock and theirs was a love that grew daily. It is a marriage we all hope to emulate.

Shirley has touched so many people. Please, if you knew Shirley from her many activities, leave her a message here. The family will share it with her.

This isn’t a time for sadness, it is a time to celebrate this remarkable life! It is a time to say Thanks You, we love you and will never forget you.

Jesus teaches us – Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.…

In the next few weeks, I have no doubt, the best room in the house will be waiting for this faith filled, loving women.
