Lang hasn’t made contact / “Queen” wants to be Kingmaker

The Sun Column Blog yesterday tossed out a couple potential names for the Tech. Supt. position including Lowell Deputy Supt. Jay Lang.

Mr. Lang’s name comes up for many of the local Superintendent opening because he did apply for the Lowell Supt. position.

The problems with his name be floated out there and being connected to his alleged supporters are

1) According to Jay Lang hasn’t he spoken to anyone about the position and he isn’t connected with anyone at the Tech

2) He doesn’t know Supt. Santoro so doesn’t understand why he would be assumed to be in her “camp”

3) Unlike the Shawsheen candidate he hasn’t called any School Committee member.

I’ll add my own addition to that list, Since the position hasn’t been posted no one knows if a Vocational Superintendent License would be required or not. If it is, to my knowledge Mr. Lang hasn’t worked in a Vocational / Technical School and I don’t believe has that License.

Why would he be interested in a position he doesn’t know if he’s even qualified for? It appears to this blogger that his name was only floated to deflect attention away from the Shawsheen candidate by those at the Tech who support him.

BTW the reason I don’t use the gentleman’s name is this isn’t an elected official or someone thinking about becoming a candidate for elected office. This is a person who has a job and even if they are interested they deserve a certain amount of privacy until they become a named finalist.

I may reference a Shawsheen candidate but up until one of his supporters provided his name to the SUN and Sarah Favot no one knew who I was talking about except the people he called and those that support him. I respected his privacy and his right to seek the job even if I think the committee should pass him over because of his perceived ties.

My buddy Jack, the SUN and others would be ranting and raving if someone was identified as a friend /supporter of certain Tech School Committee members or the current Supt.

Especially if that person had already called School Committee members to gain support before the qualifications and requirements have even been posted.

“Queen” wants to be Kingmaker

DR Vicky

Today on City Life (replayed at 4:00 pm) Dr. Victoria Fahlberg mentioned that she is considering “putting together a slate” of candidates to run for the Lowell School Committee.

Fahlberg the “Queen” of the Latin Lyceum has been an involved parent who has been critical of the Headmaster, Supt. and Administration and now the Lowell School Committee claiming they are not all on the same page, all have different reasons for being there and aren’t addressing some major issue.
To be fair that was just in the first hour, I did not hear the 2nd hour so maybe she gave some specific concerns or issue then.

Dr. Vicky has long been rumored to be a candidate for office but seemed more interested today in putting a complete slate together to run instead of running on her own merits and beliefs.

Interesting to note, that in the last election she along with Bill Taupier co-hosted a fundraiser for current school committee member Kim Scott. She didn’t elaborate this morning if Ms. Scott would be included in that slate. Dr. Fahlberg is also close to former school committee member Jackie Doherty but did not name her as a possible slate member.

I contacted three members of the current committee to ask them their thoughts on a slate including Ms. Scott who hasn’t had the chance to respond yet.

Jim Leary didn’t seem impressed and said he’s more of the “lone wolf” than a pack so he would not be interested. Committee member Bob Gignac stated “I will be running for reelection as an individual not as a part of any specific group.”

Up until today it has been very quiet when it comes to the school committee race. Maybe Dr. Vicky has inserted some energy and interest into this race. Time will tell.

  1. So, Leary’s a “lone wolf,” now? I thought he was a “ninja?” I can’t keep up with his self-image conjuring.

I like our School Committee, just the way it is. Though, a friend of mine suggested to me that Connie could make a break for the City Council, and make it. There is a pathway for a second Martin on the CC. Of course, the ‘Ward One Washout’ is always a concern.

Dave Conway could run, too. However, I wouldn’t bet on him coming in over 11th. Besides, Conway won’t leave the LPSC, as long as Jay Lang earns a paycheck.

The Lang rumor could be floated for a number of reasons. One would be a pal keeping Lang’s name fresh, just in case, Jean Franco bolts. There’s no telling why a rumor is started. But, they are only repeated, if they are ‘plausible’ and the ‘lay of the land’ fits the scenario.

PS. Gerry, You skipped over the part where Victoria suggested that Brian Martin be hired, ASAP. I have to agree. Let’s cut to the chase. It’s a done deal.

  2. This seems a little snarky about Dr Fahlberg.

The idea of a “slate” did not spring to life on City Life on Tuesday.  I have heard it discussed months ago.  Maybe Gerry needs to take Dr Fahlberg out for a coffee and Egg McMuffin some day.  In fact, if he invites me also I will spring for everyone.

The idea of a “slate” is that having folks with similar goals and methods working together provides a strong board and a better school system.  There is strength in unity.
