The big news in Lowell is that Mayor Patrick Murphy this week will announce that he has reassigned Councilor Rodney Elliot to serve as the head of the Fiance Sub-Committee in place of Councilor Joe Mendonca. Murphy believes this will help repair the hard feelings he and Elliot have had. Mendonca will take over the Flooding Sub-committee.
In addition there is a growing murmur that when LHA Board member Walter Buddy Flynn term is up this Spring City Manager Lynch will appoint Councilor Elliot to that position. Elliot has shown a keen interest in the LHA and Lynch is hoping to repair some bad feelings with this appointment.
Look for City Councilor Vesna Nuon to announce he is supporting State Rep. Kevin Murphy in his re-election campaign at a press conference later this month.
Reportedly Ted Panos and Ryan Johnston are being considered to replace Howie Carr when his contract expires later this summer at WRKO. Seems Entercom is impressed with their morning and drive time ratings and appeal.
Councilor Rita Mercier is said to have had breakfast with Mayor Murphy and work out a compromise about the mayoral aide position. Could Diane be returning in a job share with Greg Page once he goes back to school in the fall?
Rumors have Dave Nangle taking over as Manager at Lenzi’s to assist his cousin Mike on a full-time basis opening a Rep. seat for Bill Martin and a Council Seat for John Leahy.
The Mayor was recently spotted moving a chair into his Lowell Apt. people were amazed that he actually had furniture there. Dave Nangle’s car was also spotted parked in Lowell overnight. The Sun is investigating both reports.
With Steve Baddour resigning and Tim Murray’s chances of being a viable candidate for Governor over could a Baddour / Pangy ticket be in the works for a Governor’s race next year? They could challenge Grossman / Bump for the Democratic nomination.
State Rep. Tim Golden will have at least two challengers for his seat this November. A Lowell resident and a Pirate..yes I said Pirate. Supposedly a member of the Pirate Party will challenge Golden. Taking nothing for granted and to show he appeals to all people, Golden is having his first fundraiser at the Jimmy Buffet concert at Great Woods/ Tweeter Center this spring.
Greater Lowell Tech. School Committee member Erik Gitschier reportedly was seen having breakfast with former Tech. member Dave LaFerriere to get an understanding of how the committee operates and how to get motions passed and questions addressed. Gitschier wanted to hear from a respected school committee member who was fair and unbiased instead of current member Fred Bahou who has been mentoring him.
The Lowell School Committee will be holding a meet and greet to introduce themselves to the Lowell Sun editors and staff. Seems since Jen Myers has been deported to Chelmsford no one notices this committee. Supt. Franco told them not to feel bad, the editor hasn’t met her yet either and she’s been on the job longer.
If George Anthes and John McDonough return to WCAP in the morning (rumors have them dining with Col. Sam last Monday at Subway) scuttlebutt has it that Jack Mitchell and John McDonald will co-host a morning show on LTC called Sock Puppets.
Lyle Moran is said to be under consideration for a job as spokesman with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency based on his work for one of the members of that agency in the past year. Many in Lowell though he was already working for him…I mean them.
Could Lobbyist / Lawyer Steve Panagiotakos instead of running for Lt. Governor (Gerry Flynn reportedly doesn’t want the number of phone calls between the two to become public) be hired by the City to work for Lowell at the State House. Supposedly the City Manager has proposed this idea and is trying to get local banks to pony up and pay the former State Senator.
In yesterday’s Saturday chat Kendall Wallace mentioned that he started his 53rd year working at the Sun on March 27th. Reportedly current editor Jim Campanini and Publisher Mark O’Neil are planning to hold a tribute to Kendall in Thanks for his years of service to the Sun in the coming spring. O’Neil is lobbying the Denver Office to give Mr. Wallace a lifetime contract to continue at the Sun for has long as he wants.
