Column Blog Items..Good Stuff

If Your not yet reading Editor Chris Scott’s Column Blog on the Sun’s hompage..your missing some pretty interesting tidbits.(BTW – He was very good interviewing the SC candidates yesterday also)

Here’s a sample but give it a read your self…

Sweeney says sayonara to the city
A voice of reason, a voice of authority — not to mention his knowledge of municipal law — is no longer employed by the city and that’s not good.

After a distinguished legal career that spanned more than three decades working as the city’s top lawyer, or solicitor, Tom Sweeney has retired — this time for good.

…Something, however, happened between Sweeney, O’Connor, and perhaps one or two other top lawyers in the office, that triggered Sweeney’s departure.

Several attempts to reach Sweeney were unsuccessful. But two separate sources told The Column that Sweeney’s separation from the city wasn’t an amicable one

The real culprit behind high taxes

did you know that in 2010, Lavallee was the 11th-highest paid city employee? Read the article to see who else is in the top 10 but he adds the following point:

Private sector workers receive far fewer sick days. When they’re not used, they’re often capped or lost.

There’s no such restriction in the Lowell School Department. Lowell is one of the few communities in the Merrimack Valley that does not cap sick-leave buyback for school employees.

While teachers are required to work for the district for 15 years before being eligible to collect payment for their unused sick days, city employees are eligible from day one. However, payouts for city employees are capped at $30,000 for Police and Fire Department personnel and $20,000 for all other employees.

New Restaurants give city residents some good food

There’s a new Subway on Chelmsford St. where the John Honan Insurance used to be (next to Litchfield Tire). All the footlongs are delicious and they are open for breakfast beginning at 7:00 am Monday -Saturday. I stopped by last week and tried the steak, egg and chees breakfast sandwich with a coffee and didn’t need to eat lunch later. The bread was fresh and warm and the cheese nice and gooey with plenty of meat. The owner recently prepared some samples of sandwiches and homemade cookies for the WCAP Saturday Morning Live crew and they were delious.

In downtown Lowell check out King Star Cafe located at 201 Market Street and say hi to Owner Mike Difonzo. Its breakfast and lunch from 6am-2pm daily and then late night (for those that can still HANG late night!) Thursday – Sat from 11pm – 2am. The menu includes all breakfast foods like pancakes and waffles and muffins to soup and salad and sandwiches. So if you’re in the area PLEASE feel free to stop on in and say hello and maybe grab something to eat.
