I think the Sun’s Editorial is purposely misleading and ignores the citizens right to privacy instead letting their need for revenue and headlines overtake their common sense of justice and fairness for all.
Never mind that like Rodney they haven’t before 2011 asked for resumes, this year they are championing the re-election of their top source for information from the City and Council. They need their chosen one elected and the right of the citizens be damned.
Positive proof has been offered over on Left in Lowell about the Sun’s or at least the reporters bias. In case you didn’t see Mimi’s post on Left in Lowell in the last 3 month Rodney Elliot has been mentioned (mostly in positive tones) 81 times in this Election season compared to the same period in 2009 when an unbiased reporter was covering City hall and he was only mentioned in 28 artices.
These numbers seem to justify the belief that many of us have that the City Hall reporter and Councilor Elliot are this close and he leaks more info than Jackie Doherty, which Mr. Leahy is why City Councilors should NOT get resumes.
Plan E spells it out, read it John you if elected as a Councilor you have NO business reviewing resumes, it isn’t your job. Same for you Armand Mercier, you have the nerve to question anyone’s hiring when your grandson is about to go on trial for allegedly stealing gas when employed by the city. What he was hired after a nationwide search?
Hey Ed Kennedy, you ask why he’s digging in his heals? Because I and all private citizens have a right to privacy and if I want to apply it’s none of your business. Same to you Paul Belley, why should they have to white out names, the charter is clear READ IT! The Manager hires the people except for the Clerk, Auditor and Manager. Keep your white out and stay away from peoples’ private information.
Marty Lorrey and John MacDonald are the only two candidates to show common sense and respect.
I understand that I am not the brightest guy in the city, I’m just an average working stiff who is a bit of a politically junkie and found a way to vent my writing a blog. But I am smart enough to understand the differences between the State’s Open meeting Law and the State’s Policy on Public Records and the rights of individuals to NOT, let me repeat that NOT have their personal information released.
For those at the Sun and the City Council Candidates who apparently can’t / don’t get it, let me be clear, I and others who are private citizens have a right to PRIVACY over Rodney and your “Transparency” flag that you want to wave this election season.
Would and have you told us every city employee including teachers you know or are related to and who they worked for or supported in a Council race and how you got your current job before asking us to let you see our resumes. How much I or any private citizen makes at our present job is done of your business and my current employer doesn’t need to know I am looking. (Using I for all private citizens)
For the Sun to run an Editorial calling for the release of Private and Confidential Information AFTER receiving the opinion of the City Lawyer is reckless and shows a lack of respect to the privacy of individuals. Worse is trying to confuse the citizens by meshing the Open Meeting Law with the Public records Law in an attempt to cast doubt on the character of the Manager, CFO, Solictitor and new Treasurer.
You want Confidential info go to Rodney or Jackie Doherty; don’t insist the city violate mine and others right to privacy as mandated by the Law.
I firmly believe that people have a right to privacy and that I and others should be allowed to apply for public jobs without having to worry that a City Councilor like Rodney Elliot will leak my information to the Lowell Sun and so does the State.
I get so aggravated with the willingness to violate a citizen’s right to privacy just because they want to apply for a city job or board and am upset at the Sun for running an Editorial simply to get info to sell newspapers while yearly champion THEIR First Amendment Right while in the same paper wanting to trample mine.
The Law spells out I have a right to privacy.
Compare the Open Meeting law which states that resumes or applications presented at a Public Meeting are public documents while applying for a City Job isn’t. Rodney doesn’t like the Solicitor’s Opinion so he wants another one and he doesn’t have the courage to do it himself so he gets the SUN to be his lackey and editorialize misleading facts and appeal to the State. Good for you but the SUN NEVER seems to tell the citizens when their appeals have been disallowed.
I don’t always agree with the Manager but this time I’m 100% in his corner because I believe in the rights of the private citizen. I have a right to apply for a job without having Rodney run to the Sun and leak my name and I’m sure the applicants for City Manager the last time would agree with me. They were unjustly identified when a councilor fed private confidential info to the Sun.
Read the complete Opinion I have attached and tell me and any applicant we don’t have the right to privacy! The Law CLEARLY shows we do!
The Sun wants freedom of the press but also wants to trample and abuse mine and all private citizen’s right to privacy if it means they can use our names to generate newspaper sales.
