Another slow week in the Sun Political Column, You are not missing much if you just read the on-line stuff. Remember when this used to be a must read . Now like the rest of the Sun it’s not really all that interesting anymore.
A couple small items…
One has Jim Leary upset with Rodney Elliot. A few weeks ago there was mention of tension with Leary and Dave Conway. Jim maybe you need to set up some time with Mike Hayden for anger issues. I’m sure he’ll give you a discount for professional courtesy. Never realized what an angry guy you are or is that just how the Sun see’s you?
Another item takes a shot at Tom ‘Tipper” Golden for his lack of clout and his inability to get people elected who he endorses. They mention both Alan Kazanjian and Rep. “Honest” John Rogers who Golden supported for Speaker of the House. They forgot Bob McMahon who Tipper endorsed when he ran for Council and Sheriff DiPaloa who he endorsed for Congress in Song on St. Patrick’s Day before he dropped out of the Congressional race.
Looking on the bright side they could have mentioned his support of the previous former indicted Speakers DiMassi and Finneran and the fact he has received campaign donations from another indicted former Speaker Charlie Flaherty and Billy Bulger’s buddy, lobbyist Tommy Joyce and that he was the protegé of Ethically fined former State Rep. John Cox. Not exactly a great character reference list of guys to have on your resume.
The Headmaster’s “retirement” party will be this coming Friday at the ULowell Inn and Conference Center. Is this one for real or like Brett Favre will we see him again?
Other Notes:
C. Elliott has an agenda item Req. Mgr. update CC on Dangerous Dog Ord. & address unleashed dogs @ city reservoir. Those of us who walk at a reservoir or park know what a nuisance and mess an unleashed dog can be, especially if its owner doesn’t pick up after him.
C. Mendonca has a Req. for the Mgr. to provide update on # city owned surplus properties & status of each. The Varnum School here in Centraville comes to mind. The building has open windows, the ramp in the back has been ripped and torn away and neighborhood “youth” are gathering under there to smoke pot. Neighbors are frustrated with the trash filled school yard and lack of maintenance to the building and grounds. One was told by TJ McCarthy he has only so many men he can use and the school is not a priority.
State Rep. Barry Finegold received some positive reviews and picked up some campaign workers in his swing through Dracut on Wednesday.
While I keep hearing Mike Kunzler will not be a candidate for Sue Tucker’s seat I won’t believe it until papers have been turned in. I just have a feeling.
Dave Conway’s attempt at intimidating fellow members into not asking for reports by having the “poor overworked” administration list the cost of gathering information was nothing more than a grandstand move by a guy who never liked to have to work when he was “working” in the system. The committee realizes that they need information and it is the administrative staff’s job to provide it without whining. Ask some unemployed people or reduced hours people how bad they feel for this overpriced group.
Kevin Murphy was only half-joking about his families employment in the Lowell School Dept. I’m just surprised he didn’t bill someone for his public appearance at the Breakfast.
Dave Nangle as usual was the highlight of the breakfast.
Colleen Garry versus Bob Cox will be the best fight out there this election cycle. Dracut is known for bare knuckle brawls and this one has all the ingredients to leave lasting scars.
Rumors still persist that Mike Lenzi will step down from his Lowell Tech School Committee post AFTER they hire a new Supt. Former members Mike Hayden and Ralph Hogan are said to be lobbying behind the scene to get named to fill the seat. I’m lobbying right here, if it opens I am interested
There hasn’t been a lot written about the Supt. search at Greater Lowell. It should be interesting to see if the school makes any budget cuts to try to appease the City and towns after the meeting that was held this week. Does the school really need a Public Information Officer who happens to be the former aide of a Lowell State Rep?
The City of Lowell, Human Relations Office along with Civil Service, will be conducting an Informational Seminar for the upcoming Fire Fighters Exam. Informational Seminar will be held on Thursday April 8, 2010 6PM-8PM at City Hall 375 Merrimack Street, 2nd Floor Mayor’s Reception Room Lowell, Mass.
In keeping with the Law that Kevin Murphy cited in his defense of the Dracut Convenience Store, The Lowell Police Department is announcing that it will conduct minimum age purchase law compliance checks of the city’s liquor establishments throughout the year (2010). The compliance checks will be aimed at retailers of alcoholic beverages, bars, and restaurants. The compliance checks will focus on, but will not be limited to, sales to minors and over-serving by restaurants and bars.
How absurd is the fact we need to tell package store, bar and restaurant owners the police will check to make sure you don’t sell to minors. What’s next? We have to tell them that city workers can’t fill potholes at their business either? Maybe Tom Byrnes can hire his friend Kevin Murphy to defend the city workers saying the Police never warned him that this was wrong.
